Homemade Enchilada Sauce

Rather than filling your meal with a store-bought can of enchilada sauce with questionable ingredients, try this extremely tasty recipe based on a recipe from Good Cheap Eats with familiar items from your pantry!

What you need:

  • 2 T. olive oil
  • 2 T. all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 c. chili powder
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 1/2 t. minced garlic
  • 1/2 t. cumin
  • 1/2 t. dried oregano
  • 2 c. water


  •  small saucepan

Time: 15 minutes

Freezeable: Yes. Cool sauce, then pour into a freezable pint container, leaving 1-2 inches of headspace for expansion. You can also freeze smaller portion sizes for use in chili or nachos!

Serves: Makes about 2 cups.

Multiplying the recipe: The recipe multiplies very easily. If you love enchiladas, it would behoove you to make a large batch and freeze pint jars of sauce.

Homemade Enchilada Sauce:

Heat olive oil over medium heat. Add flour and whisk until smooth and bubbling. Whisk in  remaining spices. Add water, continuing to whisk until bubbling and smooth. Simmer, whisking occasionally, for 10-15 minutes or until sauce is thickened slightly.
