Homemade Baking Powder

Sometimes I enjoy making something myself instead of buying store-bought just because. Maybe it’s not cheaper, or maybe the store-bought version isn’t terrible. Sometimes I like doing it just because I know that in a pinch I can. This is one of those DIY pantry items for me. I had a great deal on cream of tartar once (because that on its own is often more expensive than the baking powder!) and decided to try this. Super easy, if you ever get the urge to try it!

What you need:

Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. cream of tartar
  • 2 T. baking soda
  • 2 T. cornstarch

Equipment

  • bowl
  • whisk

Time: 5 minutes

Freezeable: No.

Serves: Makes about 1/2 c. baking powder

Multiplying the recipe: Yes.

Homemade Baking Powder:

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl with a whisk. Put in a sealed container.

If you’re ever nervous that your baking powder is ineffective, drop a small bit in some water. It should fizz.
